Let's see how we manage a project. 

All of these process we can use tool/software to manage.

Usually, we can use either Excel, Microsoft Project or P6.
My first hand-on project is using P6 and I never get a chance to learn Microsoft project yet. Sorry, I can't tell you which one is the best.

P6 can be set up in 2 type:

1) Primavera P6 Professional Project Management. 

(PPM_standalone) - Desktop 

2 Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management.

(EPPM_seven edition) - Desktop & Web

We use this one to manage many different projects. 

ex: Oil & Gas Industry.
